Take Me To Your Leader

June 30, 2008

I’ve always wanted to try making an alien toy, but I never know if people will take to it and thus never followed through. So I did the next best thing and photoshopped Tiki The Monkey toy into an alien to see what it would look like. I have to say, lose the ears and it might just work!

Original Tiki The Monkey toy

Tiki as an alien…a very smiley alien!

Extra yummy:  In Asia, the latest toy fad is an alien dog-like creature from the movie “CJ7”.   Like any good alien, CJ7 (the dog) is bright lime green in color and has unusually big black eyes.

Sugar High

June 29, 2008

Can you tell what this cheeseburger….

….and these two Hello Kitties have in common?

Give up? The answer is: they are ALL made of marshmallows. Yes, marshmallows!! I couldn’t believe my eyes when I first saw the marshmallow cheeseburger – it was actually made up of four parts – the bun (complete with sesame seeds!), cheese, “beef” patty and the bottom part of the bun. Too bad the four parts were somewhat fused together in the middle. Would have been fun taking them apart. And for a $0.99 fake burger, don’t be expecting any fake lettuce, tomatoes and pickles! I personally couldn’t get myself to try the marshmallow burger because my brain just couldn’t process the concept of biting into a realistic looking cheeseburger that smelled sweet out of the bag. And in case you’re wondering, I cut the marshmallow cheeseburger into half just to see what color it is on the inside. Turns out the cross-section also resembles a cheeseburger. Now that’s commitment!

As for the Hello Kitty marshmallow pieces, aren’t those cute? They are actually Marshmallow Pops.

Again, I couldn’t bring myself to bite into them because it just won’t be right to bite into those cute faces! It also didn’t help that I looked at the list of ingredients and saw “Titanium Dioxide” listed as an ingredient. Umm…isn’t that sunblock? Didn’t get the sugar high I was craving for, but at least I got a visual high!

Extra yummy: If you want to see how real professional food photography is done, check out any photos by the uber-talented Matt Armendariz. Just a friendly warning: do not view his photos on an empty stomach! I was so mesmerized by his photography that I cold called him and scheduled a photo shoot for our company’s products last week. You can view the photos from the shoot here.

The Awesome Foursome

June 27, 2008

We put a lot of love and effort into our products, so it’s heartwarming to know that our retailers often use our products for their own pets. Kimberly from Jupiter, FL sent me these pictures of her four Italian Greyhounds (she calls them her “iggies”) on our Velour For Sure Donut Bed. I never knew that Italian Greyhounds are called “iggies” for short – you sure learn something new every day! I have two maltese (see their picture in the “About” section), and I’m bummed that there aren’t any cool nicknames for maltese. Heck, I’m going to call my dogs the “malts” from now on just to be cool like Kimberly!

Here’s Milaney.

And all four dogs piled in! They must love smooshing against each other because Milaney looks totally unfazed by the crowd! The other three iggies are Sicily, Rome and Mea.

And if you’re ever in Kimberly’s neighborhood, be sure to stop by her boutique store, The Haute Hound, and you might just be lucky enough to meet the awesome foursome in person!

Fun Magazine Covers

June 26, 2008

We have such a variety of cute toys and beds, we often think they are magazine-cover worthy. Judge for yourselves!

Disclaimer: These fun magazine covers are photoshopped and are not meant to be mistaken with any real publications.

I bought this cherubic garden gnome yesterday and promptly dropped it when I took it out from my car – what a klutz! Poor ‘lil guy, his pointy elf shoes didn’t survive the fall.

“I can’t feel my feet!”

Oh well, maybe if I just prop him up against something, I can still put him in the garden. Against a tree, maybe?

“Wally, you’re in my shot!”

I finally found the perfect spot right behind a brick ledge.

“No shoes? No problem!”

Extra yummy: Ever watched those Travelocity commercials with the roaming gnome? Apparently, he’s such an icon now that the company has dedicated an online store selling gnome paraphernalia. There are also some cool freebies such as ring tones and desktop wallpapers like the ones below:

File this under “Things That You Don’t See Everyday”! I was thrilled when I got an e-mail from Ancy Cherian of Venice, CA with a picture of her 10-year old Hungarian Puli Nesta. I’ve only seen Pulis on TV, so this was a real treat! Ancy wrote, “She’s had her bed since 2005. As much as we encourage her to join us on our comfy bed, she prefers her own Room Candy bed!”

Where’s Nesta’s face?

There’s that cute face. Hi, Nesta!

And don’t let that thick corded fur fool you – the Hungarian Puli’s fur is bred specifically for withstanding extreme heat and cold, so Nesta is probably weathering the summer heat better than the rest of us! Thanks for the picture, Ancy! I’m sure Nesta is a head-turner everywhere she goes.

Bubble-licious

June 23, 2008

I am such a sucker for anything that comes in different colors, just bottle it up and sell it to me. Which is why I had to buy not one, but all four bottles of these yummy colored liquid bubble bath soap at the same time. Come on, don’t they look pretty when displayed together? And I just adore the brocade design on the bottles. Very chi-chi.

Whoever was in charge of coming with the color scheme for this soap line and the names for the colors (the ones you see above were from left to right: Plumeria, Peach Blossom, Rose Petals and Cucumber Melon) must had a blast doing so. That got me thinking – what would I come up with if I had my own line of bath soap? How’s about….

Mint Julep, Grape Divine, Ultra Violet and Cranberry Crush?

Wow, those names sounded more like icee syrup than bath soap. Let’s try a few more colors. Now, how’s about…

Blueberry Bliss, Lemon Lush, French Vanilla, and Green Tea?

Sounds too much like a frozen yogurt lineup? This is so much harder than I thought! Anyway, here are a few more colors that I photoshopped just for fun – good thing there weren’t these many colors to choose from, because I would have bought them all up as well!

I periodically get photos from customers who snap pictures of their pets enjoying our products, but this is certainly a first! Lori Brown from Hawaii sent me an e-mail a couple of months ago with a picture of her darling Nalu, the very flexible Rhodesian Ridgeback. She wrote, “I just had to send you this picture of my 90 pound Ridgeback in the SMALL sized donut bed. He usually fits perfectly in the MEDIUM sized one, but I was washing it, and he was sad, so he smooshed himself into the small size! Did you ever think it could be possible???”

Well, seeing is believing! Of course, I must remind everyone that we usually recommend our large 35” donut bed for larger sized dogs. Nevertheless, I was curious as to how Nalu was able to squeeze himself into the bed and asked Lori about it. Lori explained in her e-mail reply, “He actually had to get his technique down before he figured out how to fit his whole body in there. It’s pretty crazy that he can do it. My dogs absolutely love your beds. The small size is perfect for my Italian Greyhounds. And the medium is just right for Nalu. He carries his bed around the house and finds a place where he wants to nap and then curls up and plops down in it.”

I think Nalu has the right philosophy when it comes to nap time! And how cute is it that the dogs like to nap together? Thanks again for the photo, Lori!

Man, it’s super hot today in SoCal. The kind of hot where you wish you could just stand in front of an opened fridge all day long. It is so hot, even our vinyl ice cream dog toy is melting:

I bought these lovely pastel jelly beans from Michael’s ($3.99 a bag; Wilton’s brand) in preparation for a photo shoot I did yesterday, and didn’t get a chance to use them. They look so much like glass beads, I’m tempted to try and string them together to make a jelly bean necklace.

More yummy: On Jelly Belly’s website, you can check out an online art gallery of portraits done entirely out of jelly beans. The one on Ronald Reagan is supposedly made of 10,000 jelly beans. That’s a whole lotta jelly beans!
