Haute Dolls

July 9, 2008

I was browsing the internet today and came across this picture:

My first thought was, “Wow, whoever drew that is a great anime artist!”. So naturally, I checked out the url on the picture to see more of this artist’s work. Turns out the picture above is actually a REAL doll from a Korean manufacturer called Dream of Doll. Can you believe it?? I have to admit, these dolls look so real in pictures that it is borderline creepy at first, but I couldn’t stop checking out the different dolls on the site because they are amazingly crafted – from the shape of the face, to the costumes they are wearing, and even the anime-like hairstyles. The photographs were equally amazing. Most of the pictures look like high fashion ads, like this one for example:

As I looked through the company website and did some research, I learned that Dream of Doll is a high-end maker of customized ball-jointed dolls like the one you see above. You can even customize the look of the doll by buying different wigs, outfits, different eye colors and even have special makeup applied to the doll. And these high-end dolls don’t come cheap – the prices I saw on the website range anywhere from $300 to $600 and take up to 8 weeks to manufacture. I guess big girls do play with dolls!

Extra yummy: There is a huge subculture of hobbyists of ball-jointed dolls such as Dream of Doll and the Blythe dolls, and fans would often post pictures of these dolls in various real life settings. Here is the Blythe group pool on flickr – all the pictures are somewhat morbid, but strangely addictive and very cool!

Even more yummy: I got so inspired by these lifestyle shots of toys that I decided to do a series with Tiki the Monkey. Here’s a shot of Tiki The Monkey enjoying a little spa treatment. You can view more pictures here.

Room Candy – always yummy!
