Itza A Puppy!

December 14, 2008

I was surfing Youtube the other day and came across this video of a Yorkie puppy called Chewie playing with toys.

Wait a minute – isn’t that….

By golly gee, it’s our Lulu The Lamb toy!  I’m such a dork, I started cheering at the screen when I watched the video.  And not to be left out, there’s our Joey The Monkey toy as well!

When I designed these big head toys, I wanted to make the head ball-like in shape so that they will roll around on the floor.  Looks like mission accomplished!

Cue the obvious pun: I just realized a second ago that the video is about Chewie chewing on plush chew toys. :)  And what a perfect name for this boisterous boy because Chewie is so cute I can just eat him up!

Under My Bella

September 27, 2008

Got this lovely e-mail from Courtney a few weeks back about her new English Bulldog puppy, Bella:

I just wanted to tell you how much I love your products! We just got a new puppy, and I stocked up on your super cute toys beforehand (the muffin boy is my favorite). Our puppy, Bella, loves them, and so do we! (She loves her Room Candy bed, too!)

Thanks for making such cute things. :)

Courtney & Bella

Ciao Bella! Even at her young age, Bella is already a pro at being a top model.

Wanna take a ride on my bike?

Modeling is hard work! Time for some beauty sleep!

Thanks for sharing these pictures, Courtney! She may be an English Bulldog puppy with an Italian name, but she’s an all American sweetheart!

Paint By Numbers

August 16, 2008

Back in the day when I was going to school in Singapore, we would have mandatory arts & crafts classes which were great because it’s basically a scheduled hour of playing with colored crayons/pencils/paints and enjoying one’s creative side. I don’t know why companies don’t do a mandatory “arts & crafts” hour with their employees once in a while – maybe it’ll cut down on employees’ stress levels! By the way, at Room Candy, I usually take the crew out for a nice meal every so often because that’s how we lower our stress levels. Especially if there is dessert to look forward to at the end of the meal. :)

Talking about arts & crafts, these are Paint By Numbers kits I found at Michael’s (only $1 each!), so I thought I’ll make an afternoon activity out of it.

Puppies and kittens!

You even get a practice paper to perfect your brush strokes!

So I gathered up my bowl of water, popped in a movie into the DVD player, and was all gung ho about creating a mini poster of a puppy.

Look, it’s my Martha Stewart moment!

….fifty-five minutes later….

Okay, I give up! The problem with this activity was not the paint by numbers part, it’s just that for $1, the paint that comes with the kit ain’t exactly easy to paint with. The plain water could not really dissolve the glob of dried up paint no matter how hard I agitate the paint glob with a toothpick, not even when I tried using hot water.

Let me start over. I was mulling painting the puppy with crayons, but at this point, this art project is more complicated than it is relaxing! Let’s see, what’s relatively easy to draw? How about our cherry toy?

Forget the bowl of cherries, I’m just going to do that one cherry by itself!

Step 1: Get yummy colored crayons

Step 2: Draw outline of cherry and fill in primary colors

Step 3: Use darker colors for shading and experiment with different colors to make the drawing pop

You can see I kind of screwed up the shape of the second cherry, but no worries, I will redeem this drawing with a happy background and an authentic signature!

Ta-da! It’s real art imitating a “fake” cherry toy that’s imitating a real cherry – it’s the circle of art!

Show Me Your Chi Chis!

August 1, 2008

According to an LA Times article I read yesterday, Los Angeles is the land of chihuahuas, with nearly 60,000 registered chihuahuas in the LA county. I’m guessing that the real number is even higher than that!

Good things do come in small packages!

Here’s the list of the top 10 most popular dog breeds in LA by number of registrations:

1. Chihuahua

2. Labrador Retriever

3. German Shepherd

4. American Pitbull Terrier

5. Poodle

6. Cocker Spaniel

7. Chow Chow

8. Rottweiler

9. Golden Retriever

10. Daschund

I can’t believe the maltese breed didn’t crack the top 10. It’s okay, Wally and Tiki, you’re both still number one on my list!

Anyhoo, to celebrate the mighty chihuahua topping the list, I dug up a few pictures of chihuahuas that people have sent me over the years.

This is Lucy on our Cosmopolitan Donut Bed

Look at the color of those eyes!

This is one of Myla Kent’s chihuahuas Daisy playing with our Daisy The Cupcake toy. Talk about serendipity!

And Myla’s other chihuahua Bear getting comfortable inside our Jelly Donut Bed!

Lulu and her pups on our Fur My Honey Rectangle Nest bed.

Last but not least, here’s Nunu on our Velour For Sure Donut Bed.

I have to admit, it’s hard to resist the charms of a chihuahua!

Extra yummy: The drawing of the chihuahua you see on the top of the post is actually the official mascot of our Poop Culture dog t-shirt line. I introduced the t-shirts a couple of years ago and haven’t had much time to grow the line as our burgeoning dog toy collection was taking up most of my time. I think it may be time to give it the TLC it needs – you know, as in Tiny Little Chihuahua.

Tiki Got A Haircut

July 22, 2008

Every summer, I give Tiki a puppy cut because his hair grows so long he looks like a mini sized Yeti. And every time I do it, I’m amazed at how skinny he looks underneath all his fur!

This is Tiki with long hair (the Yeti version is even puffier)

And this is how Tiki looks today right after his bath and his summer cut (the hair around his snout is still kind of wet from the bath)

He usually acts pretty indignant right after his haircut, but I realize now that it’s all an act because it always works in guilting me into “comforting” him with dog biscuits. Look at that pout! That boy knows he’s going to get some biscuits right after I take that picture.

….5 minutes later (and 3 dog biscuits gone)

“Aah…I’m feeling much better now.”

This is Tiki posing with Wally when his hair is long. He usually looks much bigger than Wally because of the added girth from his hair.

And look at the difference now!

Tiki, you look easily 5 years younger!

Extra yummy: All this talk about Tiki’s puppy cut makes me want to dig up his puppy pictures from eight years ago. These are pictures of Tiki when he was a wee puppy. He was a jolly little fella then, and he’s still a jolly little fella now!

Sleepy Time

June 18, 2008

What could be cuter than sleeping puppies? We shot this video of two 8-week old maltipoos (Shaggy and Scooby Doo) on our Jewel Tone nest bed a year ago, and we still go “awww…” every time we watch it. This video was shot right after half an hour of playing, whereby the boys were finally pooped out enough to flop into the bed together. It wasn’t long before they were bouncing all over the place again!

This was the photo that we used for our website:

Speaking of cute sleepy puppies, I saw this video of a sleepy kitten and thought it was just a riot!

Hopefully, there’s a soft bed to land on when the kitten finally plops backwards!
